Tuesday Tidbit #4: Better lighting for iPhone Pictures

Have you ever tried to take a picture with an iPhone but the people looked too dark even on a sunny day with a bright sky? It happened to me over the July 4th weekend when I tried to take this picture of my wife and my mom on the porch in the mountains. When I first tried to take this picture, the sky was fine, but they were way too dark. Then I fixed it using the steps below and voilà!

Without getting into “the why” about cameras and light exposure, here’s a quick tip for fixing this problem:

When your subject is too dark (and the background too light):

  • Tap around the darker parts of the subject on your screen. (You’ll probably see a yellow box where you tap.)

  • Try to tap on faces first (so that they’ll be in focus), but it’s ok to tap on something else

  • Your subject(s) should now appear lighter

  • Take the shot!
