Old Folks Bible Quiz?

Old Folks Bible Quiz?

I was on a website recently and couldn’t resist one of the ads that said, “How Well Do You Know the Bible?” That headline plus the first question being about Thomas Jefferson (another blog for another day) had me hooked. So I clicked it

First of all, it took me to the AARP site, which ticked me off since I am waaay too young to be needing that site. :)

Then I took the quiz. Got a 60. Cha-ching!

But here’s the thing. . . this quiz doesn’t test your knowledge of the Bible. In fact, only 3 of the questions even remotely deal with the content of the book itself. The rest of the questions are basically about religious statistics (e.g., “A recent survey found what percentage of Hispanic Americans over the age of 45 believe in miracles?”) Great question, but. . . not exactly pulling from the book mentioned in the ad!

Once again, I am struck by the great misunderstanding in our culture of what the Bible is actually about. When it’s quoted, it’s very often done out of context—by both those who say they believe what’s inside it and those who do not trust what’s in the book.

I don’t have a problem with someone disagreeing with the Bible. I really don’t. I invite those conversations and have them all the time. But I am a little weary of “search and destroy” method used by so many to prove a point. I’ve said for many, many years. . . If you want to start a religion and need some Bible verses, just tell me whatever you want the tenets of your religion to be and give me 15 minutes with my computer. Out of context, I can make the Bible mean just about whatever I want it to mean.

Much more to say on this, but I am too tired to type anymore right now.

P.S. If you’re interested in taking the quiz that I did, click here
