Chalk Thoughts
I was in a coffee shop a couple of weeks ago and got up to get something. I looked over and saw this small blackboard with the title, “CHALK THOUGHTS.” My eyes were immediately drawn to the quote right in the middle from Lisa R. which read, “I Believe in Angels.” What an interesting quote.
What immediately struck me as I walked past the board was the sudden urge to insert the words, “the Maker of” in between “in” and “Angels.” Then it would read, “I believe in the Maker of Angels.”
It’s not that I think Lisa R. shouldn’t have written what she wrote.
It’s just that her quote reminded me that sometimes we settle.
You, me and Lisa R. settle for lesser things. It is, as C. S. Lewis said that “We are half-hearted creatures, fooling around with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased,” [italics, bold mine]. 1
Now, this may seem a little harsh. You might want to say to me, “For crying out loud, Chip, Lisa R. was just putting down a quick thought in chalk. Give her a break!”
But here’s the thing. We are far too easily pleased. We are pleased to believe in angels when, in fact, the maker of the angels knows our names, loves us, and deeply desires to talk to us. The One who created the angels made us in His image, which pre-wired us for a relationship with Him.
I absolutely believe in angels. I believe at least one is hovering over me as I type right now.
But even more than angels, I believe in the One the angels bow down to. He loves me. He knows my name. He is always for me. Always.
